The Tucket Adventures

by Gary Paulsen
The Tucket series features 14-year-old Francis Tucket in the era of the Oregon Trail. His travels with his family are interrupted when he strays and gets captured by the Pawnee. With some help he escapes, but the road back to his family is anything but smooth. We highly recommend the Tucket's Travels collection for value and some rip-roaring adventure. Lots of adventure here.

Brian's Saga -

Brian Robeson's life is in transition. His parents have recently divorced and he's not sure exactly how he feels about this. Still he gets in a small Cessna and heads off to visit his father who now leaves in the Canadian mountains. What happens next puts all his other problems into the back seat. The pilot has a heart attack and dies and Brian ends up crashing into a lake deep in the woods. The plane sinks and Brian finds that all he has to live on is his wits and a hatchet.
Hatchet is a great story about survival and coming of age as Brian discovers that self-pity and despair don't work nearly so well and just waking up and slogging through the day, doing the best he can.
Hatchet is a great story about survival and coming of age as Brian discovers that self-pity and despair don't work nearly so well and just waking up and slogging through the day, doing the best he can.
Paulsen's character of Brian and his adventure was so popular that it's now in it's 20th year, and readers have demanded to know more about what happened to this boy who survived for over 54 days in the forest. We've listed the entire series below.

Alida's Song
Description: Once again, Paulsen adeptly addresses readers whose comprehension level may be far lower than their age and interest levels. Without writing down to them, this tribute to the grandmother introduced in The Cookcamp (1991) is an eloquent little novel whose simplicity is its greatest strength. An invitation from his grandmother frees a 14-year-old boy from an oppressive life with alcoholic parents and places him in the staid, wholesome environment of a northern Minnesota farm. Working with two elderly Norwegian brothers, the boy is quietly transformed by the genuine love and selflessness that helps him see life--and himself--in a more compassionate light. Leisurely paced and never melodramatic, the slender plot is as integral to the novel's appeal as the glowing character of the grandmother, whose goodness intensifies as the narrator matures and discovers the true extent of her sacrifices. The Quilt
Description: A companion to Alida’ s Song and The Cookcamp, Gary Paulsen's The Quilt spends another summer with "the boy" and his grandmother, Alida. World War II is being fought in Europe, and the boy’s mother, working in a munitions factory in Chicago, sends her six-year-old son to stay with his grandmother in Minnesota. When Alida’s neighbor Kristina goes into labor, Alida packs up the boy and goes to Kristina’s farm to help. Mystified, the boy watches as other women arrive, water is boiled, and a quilt is brought out. Now it’s time to listen, as the quilt--through the women--tells its stories about family, love, loss, and strength. As in Paulsen’s many other semi-autobiographical stories for young readers (the Brian books, Guts, etc.), the author’s voice is never far beneath the surface. His bitterness towards his own mother, for example (as revealed in the foreword), comes across in lines like this: "Soon, though, other people--men--came to visit her and she started to do very grown-up things. He did not fit in, and when life with his mother became too difficult, he went to live with his grandmother." Although this presence may be irritating to some readers, the details of a remembered time on a farm with wonderfully strong women should appeal to all. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

The Boy Who Owned the School
Most of the action of this farcical novel takes place at the high school where Jacob Freisten's primary goal is to remain unnoticed. All too often this classic loser finds himself cornered by some bully. When he is not being stuffed inside a locker or a trash can, Jacob suffers other forms of humiliation that are relayed in a string of colorful anecdotes. While running laps around the gym, he accidentally tramples Maria Tresser, the most beautiful girl in the school. Cupid's arrow strikes, and Jacob's seemingly hopeless infatuation leads to one disaster after another; but he finally wins a date with the girl of his dreams. Although Paulsen's pace may leave some readers breathless, most will relish the sharp wit and incredible energy of this ironic glimpse of high school life and young romance.
