Here are the easiest books we could find on Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea. There is presently only one at the 1st grade Reading Level, and then there is a leap to the AR2.7 2nd grade level, which leaves a large gap to filled.
One book you might consider as a fill-gap, although it's too old to ever have been rated, is a favorite of ours, a fictional book first published in 1905. Katherine Chandler's book, "Bird-Woman of the Lewis and Clark Expedition: a supplementary reader for first and second grades", was meant to be used by earlier grades, but if it proves too difficult for modern children, it can be used as a read-aloud. (Pam read it to her preschoolers.)
