Michael Grant's GONE reading levels

GONE is a popular YA dystopia by author Michael Grant. The storyline has teens isolated in a giganic bubble. All adults have vanished and there is a dark power at work. Some of the teens remain as they were, however others develop special abilities. Bullying and power plays are a natural consequence as hunger, fear, and eventually disease wrack the community.

In the blink of an eye every adult vanishes. Thus this particular dystopia begins not with a bang, nor with a rampant disease, but with just an absence. And if that's not bad enough all phones, internet, and television are gone too!

GALLAGHER GIRLS reading levels

Ally Carter is the author of the popular "Gallagher Girl" series as well as the "Heist Society" and "Uncommon Criminals". What her works have in common are teens, spies, and excitment.

This page features the reading information for her GG books.

Premise:
Cammie is fluent in fourteen languages and capable of killing a man in seven different ways, she has no idea what to do when she meets an ordinary boy who thinks she’s an ordinary girl. Sure, she can tap his phone, hack into his computer, or track him through town with the skill of a real “pavement artist”—but can she maneuver a relationship with someone who can never know the truth about her?

Cammie Morgan may be an elite spy-in-training, but in her sophomore year, she’s on her most dangerous mission—falling in love.

This is a fun series that has mild suspense, and some violence.  Ratings are from GoodReads!

GRACELING Realm reading levels

Kristin Cashore is a wonderful author. Her world-building skills are top notch, and she has the ability to breath life into even secondary characters. Because of this she has a huge following.

Here are her books and their reading information. Note that as the books of the Graceling Realm progress they become darker and more adult.

Katsa is graced. Which is to say that she is one of the people in the realm who are born with extraordinary skills. Her skill is fighting, which became apparent when she accidentally murdered her uncle when she was only eight years old. In another place and time she might have been allowed to determine her own future, however her uncle, a very nasty king, saw the benefit she could be to him as an enforcer.

Her life becomes one of violence lived as the ultimate bully until she meets Po, another graceling who has different ideas about how their unique martial arts abilities can be used.

Graceling is straight-forward sort of story suitable for most Young Adults. It has mild sexual situations and violence.

War looms in the Dells. Rebel lords are building armies with the intent of destroying the rule of King Nash. Enter Fire, a human monster in a land where there are monster-mice, monster-birds. And rather than being hideous as you might imagine, she is unbelievable beautiful. But it's a beauty that comes with a cost. The sight of her can make regular folk loose their grasp, drive them crazy with lust, or else the desire to murder her.

To complicate matter, Fire can control people's minds. But unlike her father, who also has this power, she is determined not to use it for evil ends. And to Fire's credit she attempts to hide herself in the countryside. But one day her seclusion ends when Prince Brigan arrives to engage her assistance in saving the kingdom from war.

This is a very imaginative story filled with romance and adventure. This book is a prequel.

I've noted that the readers who love Graceling frequently don't care for Fire as much. Fire is a more adult book to me. It deals more with relationships than Graceling which was more of an action-driven novel. Sexual situations, a darker tone, and violence.

Bitterblue is now queen now that Leck is dead. But Leck's evil influence persists in this darkly toned book that includes sexual content, sadism, and violence. This is not a book I would suggest for middle-graders. I enjoyed it but it's very dark, and really, a little slowly plotted.

Readers who like Fire are probably more likely to like Bitterblue.

bookcover of The Little Runaway by Margaret HillertThe Little Runaway

If you look at the cover you can see one little kitten hiding behind that big pumpkin. It's this kitty that is the subject of this delightful story where a mother cat calls her babes, and all return except for this mischievous little orange one who runs away.

Here's some sample text:
Come here, little one.
Come here to me.
No, no.
I want to go away.
Here I go.
One, two, three.

The kitten then has lots of adventures. It plays with a hose and sees a mole. It sees Mallard ducks flying in formation. It plays in fall leaves and ouch! gets bonked on the head by a ripe apple that falls from a tree. The first misadventure comes when orange kitten falls into the pool while admiring a fish. His spirits are bolstered though when he/she watches a squirrel gathering nuts.
Work, work, work.
You can work.
I see you work.
When the squirrel won't stop and play, the kitten has his second misadventure when he finds a scary pumpkin on the front steps.
Oh, oh, oh.
Where is my mother?
Help, help.
It all ends well, of course, with momma and baby reunited.

This is a very good example of where you see Margaret's experience as a first grade teacher shining brightly. This book is not only an excellent beginning reader, but it can also be tied into a study of colors and the seasons.

bookcover of The Yellow Boat by Margaret HillertThe Yellow Boat

The story of a little yellow boat which sails away and the things that can be seen from the boat.
Look here, look here.
See the little boat.
A little yellow boat.

The boat can go.
It can go away.
Go, little boat, go.
You are probably expecting a simple story about a yellow boat, but Margaret always gives us more. Right after the boat goes, we get to see 'something funny'. The 'something funny' is a frog which jumps. We also get to see turtle, which goes down, and fish.

The boat takes us on a journey past frogs that jump, turtles which go down, fish and cattails. A dragon fly which goes up. And a mother and yellow baby ducks. And a crayfish which the narrator says makes them want to run. The boy and boat meet up again and he takes the boat home.
