Top 40 Books Read By First Graders

The Renaissance folk --the people behind the Accelerated Reader system-- have a huge database that shows the reading preferences of children, and I'm using their information to provide reading ideas for you.

The following list has the Top 40 books read by-and-to children in the First Grade.   **See  quote at the bottom of this page for stats.

I think this list can be used as general guidance to books children will like.  So that teachers might want to have these books on hand in their book baskets; and homeschoolers might want to check these books out at the library.  In addition, the list can also be thought of as a potential gift list.

**In total, 940,387 first graders read 37,022,855 books and 23,881,603,535 words during the 2011–12 school year. The average number of words read was 23,405 for boys and 25,441 for girls. Approximately 25% of the books were read to students, 10% were read with students, and 65% were read independently.
