Children love to read about School
as it's one of the BIG events in their lives. It's a time when they
enter society as an active participant, sometimes leaving home by bus,
sometimes leaving mom and dad behind for the first time. There's so much
that's new and so much that is fun!
The
following books are at the First Grade Reading Level. This list has
general books about school and no books about the First Day. I'm
currently working on that list and it should be out soon.

COME TO SCHOOL, DEAR DRAGON
and Come To School, Dear Dragon
by Margaret Hillert
Dragon joins his boy at school and joins in the classroom activities.
This
book actually has more words than many other books at the first grade
level, but I've found Margaret Hillert's books to be great to use with
children even though the language is 'jumpy'.

**Caldecott Medal Winner**
SCHOOL
by Emily Arnold McCully
This
book features cute little mice. Originally it was Wordless but later
words were added. I'm ordering the book from the library so I can put up
some photos and get a better sense of what it is like. It did win a
Caldecott Medal!
The
story is about a family of mice. It begins with mom getting the
youngsters up for school. Little Bitty wants to go but is too little.
That doesn't keep Little Bitty from walking to school after the bus
picks up everyone else.
At school the teacher lets her in and lets Little Bitty be her special helper. Teacher also calls mom so that she is there after the little mouse wakes up from her nap.
