In this book readers are introduced to Sabriel, and the worlds of Ancelstierre and the Old Kingdom.

Though born in the Old Kingdom, her father, Abhorsen, has sent Sabriel to a boarding school in Ancelstierre so that she will be away from random power of Free Magic and the Dead who refuse to stay dead.  When he becomes trapped in death, Sabriel begins her search, soon finding herself in the company of a mysterious cat named Mogget, who is an aloof and malevolent spirit that is barely cooperative, and Touchstone, who was trapped in the figurehead of a boat.
