Marty
lives in rural West Virginia at a time when food and work is scarce.
When he finds a dog, he falls in love, the way kids will, and he tries
to hide him from his family.
If
lying to his parents isn't bad enough, it turns out that Shiloh belongs
to a mean low-life who not only abuses his dogs, but regularly flaunts
the law.
It's
a compelling story that this mom enjoyed reading along with her kids.
The author did a wonderful job of presenting the moral conflict in terms
old and young can relate to.

In
the first book the focus was on the relationship between Marty and
Shiloh, and how that effected all the other relationships in Marty's
life. In this book there's a shift to an examination of Marty and his
family's relationship with Judd, the mean, dog abusing bad-guy of the
first book.
In
this story, Judd takes up drinking to excess again and begins to harass
the Prestons (Marty's family) and the boy fears that Judd will go back
on their deal that lets him keep Shiloh. And instead of a focusing on
Morality, in this book Naylor turns an eye to what it means to be
wicked.
Uplifting ending. You should know that Judd wings a squirrel and watches it slowly die.

In this final volume, it's not Shiloh, but Judd who is saved/redeemed.
In
their community there is a rash of thefts and even a murder, and the
community assumes that Judd is the perpetrator. The Prestons don't
believe this and at the end Judd is inspired to change his ways.
