The MALICE series by Chris Wooding is a scary series aiming to please Middle-Graders.  A delightfully creepy set of books.

Be careful what you ask for.

You can find my review (pam) here, but to give you an idea in brief of what  MALICE is about:  It's about a comic book by the name of Malice which is the gateway in a world of the same name.

One gets to this world by getting a copy of the comic book, and then performing a small ceremoney which includes the words, "Big Jake" and "take me away".  Kids do it thinking that it's all scary-fun, but in truth it works!  And Big Jake doesn't take you away the way Calgone does.  No, he takes you to a horrid world where your life expectancy is quite short.

Part graphic novel, part novel, MALICE lets us follow the adventures of Seth and Kady and their unfortunate friends.  You can count on tension and violence and not all the characters surviving.

THE UNWANTEDS reading level information (Lisa McMann)

Lisa McMann's trilogy can be thought of as a dystopia for Middle-Graders. It is set in a society where only the useful are allowed to liven and at 13 children are divided into classes: The Wanteds, the Necessaries, and the Unwanteds.

In true dystopian style the Unwanteds are to be disposed of.  But in fact they end up safe on an island where they are encouraged to hone their special abilities.
  • some violence
  • deliciously grim tone

In this book the magical barrier between Quill and Artime is gone, and it's a shock to both societies.  The Artimeans struggle to forgive those that dismissed them as useless, while the Quillians struggle with the collapse of their goverment that followed the death of their leader.

The two boys find themselves at odds with Aaron's political fall having been caused by Alex's success.  And while Alex recovers from his wounds, Aaron plots a rebellion to bring him to power once again.
