HILLARY CLINTON - books at the 3rd Grade Reading Level

Teachers and Homeschoolers, as you know the Presidential election looms and now that there's a narrowing of candidates we thought it was time to create a list of books for children about the current candidates: Clinton and Trump.

Surprisingly there are no reading-leveled books on Mr. Trump so you will have to gather supplemental material for him.

Should he win we suppose that will be corrected.  For now, here are the books we've found about Hillary Clinton at the Third Grade reading level.  [There are no books at easier levels.]

NELSON MANDELA - biographies at the 4th Grade level

Nelson grew into a young man
and attended fine schools
in the golden city of Johannesburg,
where Africans were poor
and powerless.
Nelson became a lawyer
and defended those
who could not defend themselves.
-- Kadir Nelson

Truly, Nelson Mandela was an amazing man.

LEARNING ABOUT FORGIVENESS FROM THE LIFE OF NELSON MANDELA
(Modern-Day Heroes)
by Jeanne Strazzabosco

There are some advantages to this short 4th grade level book.  At 24 pages it will be a quick read that will introduce readers to the South African man who went from village to jail to the Presidency.

Jerry D. Flack, University of Colorado, a reviewer for the School Library Journal assures us that though the emphasis is on Mandela's remarkable character, that the book isn't preachy.  He writes, "Strazzabosco reveals the essential facts and drama of this Nobel Peace Prize-winner's life without preaching or being didactic. She infers rather than dictates that Mandela is a hero worthy of emulation."

THE STORY OF NELSON MANDELA
by James Riordan

This book tells the story of Mandela's months on the run from the police, his refusal to agree with apartheid, and his final release from prison, when he became President Mandela.

And for whatever reason this book has fallen into obscurity.  Had to dig to find a bookcover.  No reviews or other information available.

“Rolihlahla played barefooted
on the grassy hills of Qunu.
He fought boys with sticks
and shot birds with slingshots.
The smartest Madiba child of thirteen,
he was the only one chosen for school.
His new teacher would not say his Xhosa name.
She called him Nelson instead.”

ROSA PARKS books at the 2nd Grade reading level

Rosa Parks was an amazing woman who knew wrong when she saw it.  Most adults and children know her as the woman who refused to sit at the back of the bus, but she also worked to educate black citizens so they could pass voting tests.

**Mrs. Parks was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in June 1999**

Issues:
Segregation, Freedom, Responsibility, Choice

Rosa's history is covered in this book but the emphasis is also on all the other folk that endured the long, inconvenient Montgomery boycott that kept them from riding the buses.

This book uses a poetic, metaphoric approach to Rosa's story.  The Jim Crow laws are represented as a bird: a bird that "pecks, pecks, pecks" at people like Rosa Parks.  Word choices include: duet, crooned, and strummed.
That's when our feet took to the streets.
To the sidewalks. To the roads.
That's when the city buses rolled and rolled.
Nearly empty, they rolled.

Frida Kahlo books for 2nd Graders

Frida Kahlo is a remarkable artist and if you are careful about which works you choose to share, her art is very accessible to children. (Some of her art, on the other hand, may be scary or too adult.)

There are no books that we could find for practice reading on the first grade level, and there is really only one available on the second grade level. (The second book on our list has apparently vanished down a wormhole.)
