THOMAS & FRIENDS Book Index

Thomas & Friends book icon
Thomas the Tank Engine taught my son to read. Without Thomas, Percy and the rest of the gang, I don't think Dave would have ever slowed down enough actually practice. And while he loved having me read the stories, he wanted to 'do it himself!'

The Steamies provide EXCELLENT motivation for little guys to learn to read, especially as there are books at many different levels. From books suitable for beginning readers (with a little experience under their belts) to those capable of reading at the 3rd and 4th grade levels.

This was one of our favorite books to share when David was younger. In this funny story Thomas ends up with fish in his boiler! And those fish will tickle both Thomas and your small fry :]

bookcover of Fast Train, Slow TrainFast Train, Slow Train

Told in rhyme, this book retells the classic Tortoise and the Hare story using Steamies -- principally gentle Edward and cheeky, vane James.

The 'official' sources say that this book is at the Beginning 1st Grade level, but I wonder if a mistake hasn't been made. The text seems at a higher level than that. Take a look at Amazon's sample pages and see for yourself.

Love this one. It's a classic Thomas story where Thomas and Bertie first seem at odds, but end up working together.

The day begins with Thomas being sad and jealous of Bertie because the bus gets to take the school children on an excursion and Thomas must work. At the end though, Bertie breaks down and Thomas gets to come to the rescue. A fan pleaser.
"Thomas wants to help.
But then he will be late-

Stop or go.
Help or hurry.
What should Thomas do?"

Oh my, this one brings back memories! My son used to kiss the last page of this book every time we read it.

In this story Thomas thinks no one remembers that it's his birthday... but, of course, we know better. GREAT book to give as a birthday gift to other Thomas fans.

In this book Thomas sees a Dragon! and it scares him quite a bit until he finds out that it is merely a parade float. This isn't my favorite Thomas book but children will like reliving the live action adventure with our Steamie friends.

No look inside unless you use Amazon's Kindle software.

This is a very popular story featuring that splendid James and his run-in with a hive of bees!

Children will LOVE James' funny expressions and his poor swollen red nose.
"Bees are very loud!" said James.
"Do not make them mad," said Trevor. "They may sting you!"
"Hmmmph!" said James. "I am not scared of a bunch of bees!"
James puffed off.

bookcover of Henry and the ElephantHenry and the Elephant

This is one of those Thomas books where if your child hasn't seen the video, they might not be able to make much sense of what is going on.

In the video version Henry finds a blocked train tunnel. He pushes some cars to try to clear the mess, only to have them push back! The "blockage" turns out to be an escaped circus elephant. The elephant is enticed out, but when Henry wheeshes steam the surprised elephant sprays him with water. The book approximates this tale.
The Foreman had a plan.
Henry could push trucks
into the tunnel.

"Wheesh," said Henry.
Henry did not like
tunnels.
He was scared.
More difficult words include: grumbled, something, grunted, foreman, scary, hardest, backwards, and laughed.

bookcover of Henry's Bad DayHenry's Bad Day

Henry has a new paint job and he's so happy with it that when it begins to rain he hides in a tunnel rather than get wet and dirty. Sir Topham Hatt, of course, is not pleased that the passengers are inconvenienced so he has workmen build a wall to keep Henry from chugging out. (I know. Not really sensible, but such is life on Sodor.)

The stalemate continues until the day when Gordon breaks down. Having had enough of not being a 'useful engine' Henry pleads with Sir Hatt to be freed.

Thomas the Tank Engine Books for Kindergarteners

The 5 Easiest Thomas  Books
GO TO the Thomas AND Friends INDEX

I decided to compile this list when tidying up my bookshelves. Looking at our old favorites reminded me of how important Thomas and Friends were to Dave's learning to read.

The following 5 books are THE easiest practice readers. These are books that are classified as pre-primers, which means that they are below the 1st Grade level. Enjoy!

bookcover of Catch Me, Catch Me! (Thomas and Friends)Catch Me, Catch Me!

In this little book the text is LARGE and the sentences are short; and the topic is a race between mighty Gordon and our favorite little blue engine.

Here's some sample text.
Gordon is big.
Gordon is blue.

Thomas the Tank Engine is blue too.

"I am fast.
And you are slow.
I will race you.
Go, go, go!"

I like Owain Bell's drawings. The engine's faces are cheerful (mostly) and there's enough detail in the picture to keep the Sodor background interesting. A very good book for beginning readers.

bookcover of The Close Shave (Thomas and Friends)Close Shave

You might see that green engine and think it's Percy, but it's not. It's Duck, another member of the gang, and in this book his mishap involves careening into a barber shop. (Okay, not as cool as Percy getting covered in delectable chocolate, but it's cute!)

It's an adventure that makes more sense in the video than in this book where the text tends to wander off-topic. So you might wait to introduce this one until after your child has seen the dvd.
Thomas and Duck
are friends.

They are
not friends with the
Troublesome Trucks.

They like
to chug up hills.

They like
to zip down hills.

Which is better, Roads or Rails? Bertie and Thomas decide to race after having a friendly argument about which is better. The two friends set off and have fun, but not without stumbling across a number of obstacles.

I happen to like this one because, for once, Thomas shows some patience.
"Go fast," says Annie.
"Go faster," says Clarabel.
"Wait and see," Thomas tells them.

Hiro is one of the new(er) characters. He first appeared in the Hero of the Rails movie where Thomas wanders off on a side track and finds him. Thomas and his closest friends work to get Hiro repaired in secret because they think Sir Topham Hatt might scrap the old engine, but, of course, nothing is further from the truth. Hiro is an honored old Steamie.

Children who like Hiro will be happy to find this adventure replayed in this book as Thomas finds the sweet old engine and helps to have him repaired. The two then end up rescuing the trouble making Spencer --who is the one unfortunately stuck in the muck and mire.

bookcover of Thomas the Jet EngineThomas And The Jet Engine

A hilarious tale that features quite a few of our favorite Steamies. It begins when Thomas goes to Brendam Docks to pick up a jet engine. Cranky loads the engine but when he gets sloppy his hook catches the on-switch, the jet engine starts, and Thomas shoots off at super-sonic speed!

The fun comes when he zips past other supposedly faster engines, like smug Gordon.
